It is yours.”

He left.

Jeremy remained.

“You can still ask me to leave.”

“No.”

“Okay.”

I broke the seal.

Inside were three handwritten pages.

Lacey’s younger handwriting.

Rounder.

Less controlled.

At the top:

Jill,

I don't know if you will ever read this.

I stopped.

The first line echoed Amanda’s recording decades later.

People writing truths they were unsure would arrive.

I continued.

If you are marrying Jeremy, then I need to say something I cannot say to your face without becoming someone I don't want to be.

My throat tightened.

Lacey wrote that she hated me.

Directly.

No polite language.

She hated that I made Jeremy laugh.

Hated that he looked at me differently.

Hated that people whispered after we kissed.

Hated that I seemed to move through the store as though nothing had happened.

I flinched because some of it was true.

At twenty-one, I had acted tougher than I felt.

That probably looked like indifference.

Then she wrote:

I also know Jeremy is not something you stole.

I stared.

She had reached that truth even then.

Briefly.

Before pain buried it for years.

He made choices.

I made choices.

You made choices.

Nobody gets to pretend only one person broke this.

Jeremy closed his eyes.

I kept reading.

Lacey wrote that she had been with someone else.

She did not name Mark.

Not yet.

She said the baby might not be Jeremy’s.

My hand shook.

She had intended to tell me.

Before the wedding.

The truth existed three days before I married him.

Then:

I told Jeremy the baby was gone when it wasn't because I wanted him to hurt.

That was wrong.

I don't know if I will ever forgive myself for it.

Jeremy looked down.

The next paragraph was harder.

I don't know if the baby is Jeremy’s.

There is another man.

I am trying to figure out what to do.

I went to the courthouse because I thought if I made something official, at least one part of this would stop moving.

It didn't.

I thought of the paternity acknowledgment.

Mark’s signature.

Karen’s note.

The torn pages.

Then Lacey wrote about me.

I have imagined coming to your house and telling you everything before you marry him.

I have imagined ruining the wedding.

I have imagined letting you marry him and making sure you always wonder whether he chose you because I disappeared.

I hate all of those versions of me.

My eyes filled.

The next line stopped me.

So I am giving this to Bonnie with one condition.

If you ask whether I objected, she can give it to you.

If you don't ask, maybe that means you already decided not to look backward.

I stared at the paper.

Jeremy whispered, “That is…”

“Complicated.”

“Yes.”

I almost laughed.

The forbidden word.

Lacey continued.

I am not giving you permission to marry him.

I am not asking you not to.

I am telling you there are things you don't know.

If you want to know, ask.

That sentence hurt.

Because I had not asked.

I had not wanted to know.

Not because someone tricked me.

Because I was young and afraid of the answer.

My anger at everyone else shifted slightly.

Not erased.

But widened.

I had participated in one kind of silence too.

I knew Lacey had been pregnant.

I knew Jeremy had left her badly.

I knew she disappeared.

I never asked for her version.

I had decided knowing would only complicate my happiness.

That was not equivalent to the lies that followed.

But it was mine.

I kept reading.

Lacey wrote:

If you marry Jeremy, I hope he tells you the truth about me.

He did not.

I hope he tells you when he is unhappy instead of letting someone else discover it.

He often did not.

I hope you tell him when you are angry instead of becoming right enough that you don't have to be vulnerable.

I stopped.

Jeremy looked at me.

I almost laughed through tears.

“She knew me for one summer.”

“You were memorable.”

“Not now.”

“Sorry.”

The line irritated me because it was accurate.

Then:

I hope neither of you spends your marriage trying to prove that choosing each other was worth hurting me.

My throat tightened.

We had.

Not consciously.

But sometimes.

Jeremy had turned guilt into silence.

I had turned loyalty into a moral debt.

The marriage carried Lacey even when we never said her name.

The final page began differently.

I don't know whether I love Jeremy anymore.

I stared.

This was written before our wedding.

Jeremy looked shocked.

“She never told me that.”

“She didn't have to.”

I continued.

Maybe I love who I thought we were.

Maybe I love that losing him makes me feel like I lost a future.

Maybe that is different.

I don't know.

The maturity of that line felt almost impossible beside the cruelty she later committed.

But people are not linear.

They can understand something at twenty-one and forget it at forty.

The letter ended:

If you read this, then you asked.

So here is the answer.

Yes, part of me objects.

Part of me wants you both to be miserable.

Part of me hopes you love each other enough that someday I stop caring.

I don't know which part will win.

I folded the letter.

No one spoke.

Jeremy finally asked, “Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

“At her?”

“Yes.”

“At simplification.

Just sad.

Back home that night, Jeremy had made soup.

I ate.

We talked about Karen.

Then Lacey’s letter.

Then nothing important.

At bedtime, Jeremy stood at the guest-room door.

He had moved back there after the night I panicked beside him.

Not because I asked.

Because he said we later, Second Room’s pilot program launched.

No ribbon cutting.

No speeches from family.

A simple announcement from the oncology center.

Transportation vouchers.

Short-term lodging grants.

Volunteer companions.

Karen attended.

I did too.

Jeremy stayed home because the board had asked him to.

He respected that.

The first volunteer orientation included a phrase drawn from Amanda’s letter of intent:

Help without ownership.

I stared at it.

Karen did too.

“That’s the whole story.”

“Almost.”

“What’s left?”

I looked toward the room.

People signing up to sit with strangers during treatment.

No family history.

No guilt.

No secret marriage.

Just presence.

“What we do next.”

Karen smiled.

For once, that did not sound threatening.

It sounded open.

That evening I returned home and found Jeremy on the porch.

He stood when I approached.

“How was it?”

“Good.”

“Did it feel like Lacey?”

“Not really.”

He looked surprised.

“Is that bad?”

“No.”

“What did it feel like?”

“Like something that outgrew her.”

Jeremy nodded.

“That’s probably right.”

I sat beside him.

After a while, I opened my purse.

The wedding ring was inside.

Jeremy saw it.

His breathing changed.

I held it in my palm.

“I brought it with me today.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to know whether I felt married without wearing it.”

“And?”

“Yes.”

His eyes filled.

“That doesn't mean…”

“I know.”

“Let me finish.”

He stopped.

“I feel married.”

“Yes.”

“I also feel hurt.”

“Yes.”

“I love you.”

His face changed.

It was the first time I had said it since the courthouse.

He closed his eyes.

“I love you too.”

“I know.”

“And?”

“I want to try wearing this again.”

Jeremy did not move.

“Do you want me to put it on?”

“No.”

His expression tightened slightly.

I placed the ring on my own finger.

That mattered.

My hand.

My choice.

The metal slid over the indentation it had left months earlier.

It fit.

Not because nothing had changed.

Because everything had.

Jeremy looked at it.

Then at me.

“I don't know what to say.”

“Good.”

He laughed through tears.

We sat on the porch until it grew dark.

Inside, the phone rang once.

Neither of us moved immediately.

For once, the future could wait long enough for us to finish the moment.

<a
