absolute.

Second Room expanded from eight hotel partnerships to thirteen.

Transportation rides doubled.

A retired teacher volunteered twice a week to sit with patients courthouse alone.

Not because anyone summoned me.

I needed a certified copy of our original marriage record for unrelated financial paperwork.

Bonnie was gone.

A young clerk I had never met typed my name.

“Jeremy and Jill Tolley?”

“Yes.”

“Married 2004?”

“Yes.”

She printed the page.

The same marriage.

The same names.

The record had not changed.

We had.

I folded it into my bag.

As I turned to leave, I stopped.

Twenty-two years earlier, Lacey had left a letter here.

Three years earlier, Bonnie had helped another marriage record pass through.

Months earlier, I had walked through these doors desperate to prove I was Jeremy’s wife.

Now the question seemed almost embarrassing in its simplicity.

A courthouse could tell me whether I was legally married.

It could not tell me whether I wanted the marriage.

That answer had never belonged to the clerk.

It belonged to me.

I walked outside.

Jeremy was not waiting.

I had told him I wanted to come alone.

He had respected it.

My phone showed one message.

Hope it went okay. No need to answer until you’re ready.

I smiled.

Then replied.

Got the certificate. Heading home.

No secret.

No delay.

No fear.

Just a sentence sent when it was true.

Click here to continue reading: PART 35: Returning to the Courthouse Showed Me the Record Was Finally Simple, but Our First Anniversary After the Truth Was Anything But

Erica Weller did not want to mail the envelope.
